Summary
An Indian direct-to-consumer brand selling handmade homeware. We moved its online store from Magento to Shopify, kept the complex product data in a custom Laravel service, and connected the new store to the business's delivery, fulfilment and inventory systems.
The problem
The catalogue is large and varied: hundreds of handmade products across many collections, materials, finishes, sets and sizes. On Magento, managing these variations had become complex and slow to change, and the store needed to move to Shopify. The move had to work the Indian way: prices in rupees, cash on delivery, Indian courier partners, and stock split between the warehouse, retail stores and marketplaces. None of it could interrupt day-to-day selling.
The storefront is public. The custom Shopify apps and the Laravel admin are private, and we can't share access to the dashboards because of client confidentiality.
Key features
Laravel variation service
Product variations, sets and attributes are managed in a custom Laravel app and served to Shopify through a fast Laravel API, instead of being forced into Shopify's standard variant model.
Custom Shopify apps
Connect the Shopify store to the Laravel service and the business's back-office systems, so the storefront shows the right options and stock for every product.
Magento → Shopify migration
Catalogue, customers and order history moved from Magento to Shopify, with URL mapping and redirects.
Delivery tracking and fulfilment
Orders flow to fulfilment and courier partners, and shipment tracking flows back to the store and to customers.
Inventory sync
Stock stays in step across the online store, the warehouse and other sales channels, and feeds the Ellementry 360 operations dashboard (see the next project).
SEO
Redirects from old Magento URLs, canonical URLs, sitemaps, structured data and metadata across collections and products.
Challenges
- 01Challenge
Handmade products come in many materials, finishes, sets and sizes that don't fit neatly into Shopify's standard variants.
SolutionThe variation logic lives in the Laravel service, which serves the valid options for each product through its API; the custom Shopify apps present them on the storefront and carry the chosen item through to the order.
- 02Challenge
Moving platforms while orders, deliveries and returns kept running every day.
SolutionData was migrated in stages and the production systems (fulfilment, courier tracking and inventory) were reconnected to Shopify before switch-over, so operations carried on without a break.
- 03Challenge
The India store works differently from our US projects: rupee pricing, cash on delivery, Indian courier partners and stock spread across stores and marketplaces.
SolutionWe built it as its own system rather than a copy of another client's, with integrations chosen for the Indian market and inventory rules that reflect how stock is split across channels.
